Bjarke Ingels In terms of the social and cultural elements, what resulted with Superkilen was almost like a different take on integration. I think today all over the Western World, and this is definitely true in Denmark, through immigration there is a population of Islamic ethnic and cultural backgrounds. So, rather than it being about all of the people coming to Denmark becoming Danish, Denmark could now actually highlight the benefits that a multicultural society brings.

In a neighborhood like Nørrebro you can definitely see it; in the restaurants, you have a lot of sort of Arabian and North African, Middle Eastern food which has definitely given you a much broader palette than the traditional Danish open sandwiches. Now with Superkilen, the urban architectural environment receives the same kind of benefit and actually gets a richness that goes beyond the traditional palette or material and furniture that you see in a Danish city. In that sense, the Nørrobro district and the city of Copenhagen can see a successful expression of new communities from different races and religions, and become an important voice in this sort of global discussion about migration and integration.
